Watching Tail Dragger flying videos from guys like Trent Palmer over the years tells me there are 2 types of pilot... Those who have Ground Looped and those who will Ground Loop. Well on a recent trip to The Appalachian Mountains, I joined the latter group. I have Ground Looped!
While it wasn't the nicest flying experience of my life, it showed me that everyday really is school day. Ground Loops can cause serious damage to aircraft depending on the circumstances such as speed, terrain etc. Thankfully my experience meant that only my pride was hurt. The SuperSTOL was fine!
When people say that taildraggers must be flown until they are in the hangar they are not exaggerating. The Ground Loop happens fast and it is impossible to stop once it is in motion.
Vic Payne's word still ring in my ears today, albeit with a little more humour now... "We're passengers now Buddy!" Even with my left rudder pedal all the way down, how right he was.
